Attendees from well over 25 countries gathered in the heart of Verona at Palazzo della Gran Guardia for an exceptional grand tasting that united the finest Italian wine producers from all over Italy. Thomas Matthews, Executive Editor of Wine Spectator brought it to the point: “The goal of OperaWine is to showcase the quality and diversity of Italian wines. We wanted to present producers from all across Italy, who are recognized leaders in their regions, using the benchmarks of quality, innovation, historical significance and consumer acceptance. Our partner, Vinitaly, gave us complete independence in selecting the wineries. Wine Spectator reviewed about 3,000 Italian wines in 2012, all in independent blind tastings; this data was used to identify what we believe to be the best producers in the country. Overall, it’s easy to choose the finest 100 from 4000 Italian fine wine producers, you just make 3900 enemies”.
Stevie Kim, Managing Director of Vinitaly International concludes: “For me personally, just to gather 103 Italian winemakers in the same room is already an accomplishment in itself. If you get the great wines as a bonus, then as the Italians would say “il resto è grasso che cola”.
"Finest Italian Wines: 100 Great Producers" commenced with the press conference OperaWine meets VinitalyWineClub alluding to the latest developments at Vinitaly to conquer wine e-commerce as well as anticipating issues pertaining the Talk Business Series during the fair days on the Chinese wine market.
The conference was attended by various important Chinese officials as well as the giants of the Chinese E-Commerce and Social Media, which conversed on the current state of the Chinese wine market and investigated new models of collaboration with the world's largest wine fair. Chinese trade representatives of Tmall, YesMyWine, Vinehoo, Tencent Group, New Food Magazine and M1nt Cellars emphasised in their small group conversations with the winemakers at the subsequent tasting that collaboration between Italy and China is needed to capture the Chinese e-commerce market, which is estimated to be worth 2.8 trillion Yuan (US$ 457.6 billion) by 2016.
The attendees met the protagonists of OperaWine - the Great Producers - shortly after the conference as the grand tasting commenced. The iconic winemakers were introduced by the exceptional wine experts Robert Joseph (Editor-at-Large of Meininger's International Wine Business), Terry Xu (Chief Wine Consultant of Chinese E-Commerce Platform YesMyWine) and Luca Gardini (World's best Sommelier 2010). The full set of videos will shortly be available on www.operawine.it and the official Vinitaly International Facebook page.
According to Terry Xu: "OperaWine makes itself the best window of Italian wine by selecting one single wine from 100 best wineries from all the 20 wine regions of Italy. I have to say that OperaWine is the only and the best opportunity to taste those greatest Italian wines in one day and in one place."
OperaWine had attendees discover the traditions, identity and heritage of Italian wines prior to the successful 47th edition of Vinitaly, which counted some 148,000 visitors (+6%), of which 53.000 were international attendees (+10%) visiting from 120 countries. On 95.000 square meters, 4.200 exhibitors welcomed trade professional, media and producers alike. The next instalment of the fair will take place on 6th-9th April 2014, with OperaWine scheduled on Saturday April 5th.
The organisers of OperaWine would like to thank its great supporters and sponsors Air Dolomiti, Asiago, Electrolux, Fondazione Arena, Levoni, Ponente, Surgiva and VinitalyWineClub for their efforts and resources offered to present the second edition of OperaWine.
